POWERHOUSE ARTS DISTRICT

About Powerhouse Arts District

The Powerhouse Arts District is a historic warehouse district in Downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, United States. Its name derives from the unused generating station Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse. This neighborhood was previously called “WALDO”, an acronym for Work And Live District Overlay, but has since been renamed though is still occasionally used on maps and in local parlance. Part of what was once called the Horseshoe Section, the neighborhood’s informal borders are Newport to the north, Exchange Place to the east, Paulus Hook to the south and Harsimus Cove to the west. Since 1888, the Chamber which is near the area has been central to building valuable relationships and providing resources to business.

The Powerhouse Arts District (or “PAD”) is one of the smallest neighborhoods in Jersey City, but it packs a helluva punch. Primarily comprised of manufacturing buildings erected in the 1800s, turned into artist live/work spaces in the later 1990s and early 2000s (and living among the new high rises dotting Jersey City’s new skyline), the PAD is where you can live out all your Big loft-living fantasies.
